Luke 4:1-4… And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for 40 days, being tempted by the Devil. And He ate nothing during those days. And when they ended, He was hungry. The Devil said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written, man shall not live by bread alone.”
There is a phrase in this paragraph that really bothers me… “being led by the Spirit” immediately following His baptism in the Jordan River, the Spirit led Jesus in the wilderness where he was tempted by the Devil. I would hope the Spirit would lead me as far from the Devil as possible. Apparently that isn’t His role. He leads and protects. “Don’t leave home without him.” Another thing we learn from this story… the Devil is an opportunist. Jesus was hungry. The Devil tempted him with food.
I am hungry today. I have to fast until I give blood for testing this morning. Have you noticed? Not having food isn’t that hard until you are told you can’t have any. Then it looms over you like a picture. Now, let me ask you a question… Was it a sin for Jesus to make bread out of a stone? I would say, “No.” The sin was doing anything the Devil asked Him to do. And that is the trick. When you obey the Devil, even to do something that is not prohibited, you are his servant rather than God’s. In the original sin, the Devil tempted Eve to eat of a tree, that God had forbid. The Devil got Eve to thinking about God and arriving at her own decision… “Surely, He would not put us in a garden with a fruit we can’t eat.” And then the Devil led her to question God’s motive by telling her about the fruit she was denied. “It will give you knowledge like His; how can Godly knowledge be bad?” Eve and Adam were weak and they partook of the fruit. Don’t listen to the Devil’s temptations. Shut Him up like Jesus did. I don’t think it is necessary to know every verse in the Bible. But, I think it is important to have a promise that you trust and that grows your faith. However you do it, speak the Truth and that will shut the Devil up. He hates Truth.
