Let go and Let God

Luke 17:5-6… The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” And the Lord said, “I you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea’ and it would obey you.”

I have heard a number of interpretations of this teaching. Mostly, they have focused on the size of the seed and the fact that it is not the size; it is the growth potential. I want to point out some different points today. A seed has no vision for its future. When it is put in the ground, it is in a dark place. Out of it, in that dark place, new life springs forth. It grows toward the light, through the shallowest ground. The seed, itself, dies. The new life grows and will not be stopped  by simple obstructions.

Are you in a dark place? The seed did not see a way out of the darkness. But the seed held the promise of new life and it did not stop the new life from reaching to the light. In fact, it let go of the new life so that it could freely grow. That is how faith grows in our lives; it reaches toward the light. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” So, faith reaches to Jesus. The seed simply lets go and dies. Are you holding on to dreams and visions, hoping that God will bring them to pass? Perhaps it is time to let go. The mustard seed does not know how to preserve itself or grow itself. But it is prewired to be a mustard plant. It cannot grow up to be a lemon tree, even if it desires that… which it can’t because a seed has no desires. You are prewired to grow into a certain thing. Let go of your personal desires and let God bring forth what He intended for you.

When Jesus taught this, He knew how foolish it would be for someone to tell a mulberry tree to get in the sea. That is definitely not the essence of this teaching. It is a bit like saying, “It is raining cats and dogs.” We use that saying when in fact nothing even close to that has ever happened. What happens to the mustard seed in the darkness of ground is not possible or even desirable to the seed. Faith sees the impossible as possible and knows the unknown.

Reach toward light, Jesus. Let go of your desires. He knows how you are wired. For the most part, seeds don’t grow. Imagine a huge seed. What He has put in you is far different and greater than what you can see. Let go.
