Luke 9:23-24… And He said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.

As I typed this scripture, I had a feeling that I have written on it before. That happens sometimes since I read the same Bible every year. I would have to look back in my journals to know for sure, but i think this is about the tenth year I have done this. I encourage everybody to read the Bible every morning.

Since God wrote it, you and I will never quite know it all. And it is like manna from old days in the desert. It is new each day. Manna looked the same on Thursday as it did on Wednesday. But it was new and it was from God. The pages of the Bible look the same as each other, but the message from God is new each day. One thing I notice about today’s verses is that God’s ways are totally opposite from ours. In the ways of the world, if you want to save something you protect and horde it. Jesus said, “If you want to save your life, lose it.” The issue is, the life we live in the flesh is entirely different from the life we live in the Spirit. Some churches spend a lot of time trying to find the similarities between God’s ways and the world’s ways. I remember when dancing in the spirit was becoming a thing in churches, some of the proponents said, “God created dance and the Devil stole it.”  That was manipulation. The Devil cannot steal from God. He can imitate or duplicate but he can’t steal. That which originates in heaven is eternal and cannot rot or be stolen.(Matthew 6:19) His ways are not our ways, they are higher.

To follow Jesus, we need to let go of our baggage. The ways of the flesh are baggage in the life of the Spirit. One of the lies of TV evangelists is that we will prosper in the flesh if we do what God asks. It is more of a deception than it is a lie. But aren’t they really the same? If you have been deceived, you have been lied to. Jesus, Himself, not a ‘jesus salesman’ said the way to follow Him is to let go of the ways of the world.  “Put the old life to death.” That is a command for all of us. I saw a sign in a café,

“Feed your dreams, Starve your fears.”
