2 Peter 2:5-6…If He did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with 7 others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes, He condemned them to extinction, making them and example of what is going to happen to the ungodly.
God is a just God. Every human will get what he has chosen… what he deserves. God is love … and… God is just. Some people expect love to win out over justice. Justice is an expression of God’s love so, in a way, love wins. The problem lies in our definition of love. God has preserved for us a place of abundant beauty. For that to be meaningful, He also has to have a place of darkness and destruction for those who don’t believe. Otherwise, why do we believe? We believe because we know it’s right. That takes faith. Our place of unquestionable beauty is in the realm of the spirit. We can’t point to our place by the sea with an Italian sports car in the garage and say, “See, God loves me.” The life that God gives is rich in spiritual gifts… not, necessarily, physical rewards. I have heard preachers who would argue that point with me. I will have an honest discussion with Bibles open and bathed in prayer. I don’t want to take anything away from the physical gifts which the Lord gives, but I want to put emphasis on the spiritual. Humans are, by nature, carnal, and our attention tends to be on the carnal part of life. If our carnal needs are met, we decide that we are happy. Once we achieve that state, we might quit looking and that is a type of death. Life is our relationship with God. (see John 17:3)
I have been thinking lately about the beauty of friendship. Do you have a dear friend? That is a gift of love. It is not a gift of accumulation. You may have acquaintances because of what you have accumulated, but not necessarily friends. When I was 18 I raced motocross. I had acquaintances who also raced motocross. Not one of those relationships evolved into a friendship. That does not make it meaningless, but, don’t confuse relationship with friendship. Friendship is wonderful, not just because it involves another human but because it involves love. Love is the most significant of all of God’s gifts. Enjoy.
