Fan the Spirit in You

May 31, 2018

2 Timothy 1:6… For this reason, I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self control.

This was in this morning’s reading and I thought it quite timely. A week or two ago God reminded me of this verse with regards to our present move to Arizona. He told me that we are going down there to fan into flame the gift that He has already put in the people we will be with. He told me that we will not need to start people as much as fan them. The phrase that doesn’t fit is, “through the laying on of my hands.” So that was not part of what He challenged me to do.

This is a good reminder for all of us. Have you let the gift of God lie idle in you? The gift includes power, love, and self control. That is our evidence of His Spirit. We have not been given a spirit of fear. The Spirit we have from God is not fearful. If you have abiding fear, you need to stir up the gift of God. I have experienced fear because of anticipation. I fear what might happen. Mostly, what I fear doesn’t happen, so I fear for no reason. Fear is a mental condition before it is an active force. It is not always a bad thing. Sometimes fear steers us away from danger. But… we ought not to live by fear. The Holy Spirit does not live with fear driving Him. He already knows the future and He knows the power of God. And He knows the love of God. He does not fear the unknown because there isn’t any.

Fan into flame the gift that is in you. How do we do that?  The gift that is in us is the gift of the Holy Spirit. We fan Him by obeying Him; doing what He tells us. If He is encouraging you to pray, He jumps on board when you do. If He encourages you to love on somebody, He will be with you when you do. If He stops you from saying something, you will have His peace in your heart.

Paul also says that we will have the spirit of self control. That doesn’t need much explanation but I sure need it at work in me. Paul told Timothy to, “Fan your own gift.” You don’t need a seminar or a retreat.
