Train for Godliness

May 28, 2018

1 Timothy 4:8… for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds the promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

We are living in a time of emphasis on exercise, bodily training. My mid section is growing and the one thing that helps most is exercise. At least that is what I am told. It is interesting that Paul mentions it in this letter. And that he says, “It is of some value.” But, then he contrasts it with godliness and gives godliness greater value. His reason is that godliness is not only good for now but for eternity as well. So, every time you exercise consider the greater value of godliness and don’t neglect to grow in that, too. How does that work? Paul tells Timothy to train himself for godliness.

Verse 7… Have nothing to do with irreverent silly myths. Rather, train yourself for godliness.

To train for godliness, one must study and properly grasp the scripture. Now, I must say here that we get to know God by knowing the whole Bible. That takes time because it is a big book. But knowing God is a prerequisite to godliness. So… set your heart and mind on godliness and get started. We train for physical activity and sometimes it is painful. I used to run races and preparing for a race required commitment and endurance on my part. I was taught that I needed to run half the distance, of the upcoming race, effortlessly.

Then I would supposedly be ready for the race. So, I ran daily… pushing my distance continually. It is that level of devotion that we need to grow in godliness. Training is more intense than mere study.

Verse 10… For, to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.

I trained for races because i wanted to finish well. We train more effectively  in godliness if we have a goal. Set your hope on God and train. Some people study so that others will notice they are studious. Get past that. Study to know God and achieve godliness. In life, there is nothing, no one, like God. Time could not be better spent than learning about Him… getting to know Him
