Ephesians 5:8… At one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light…( for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true.)
As a child of God, you are not the same as you used to be, nor are you the same as those who deny Jesus. The change is not just in how you think or believe; it is in how you function in the world. 100 years ago, or so, there was a strong push to act like Christians if you were one. The pendulum has swung. Now I see Christians trying to look like everyone else, supposedly keeping communication open.
People look on the outward appearance and make decisions by what they see. God, in wisdom, looks at the heart and knows why we do things. Are you trying to please God or men? Paul says, “Now, you are light in the world.” As light, we are not running from darkness, we are exposing it. The nature and business of light is to overcome darkness. Notice; we don’t completely eliminate it, we overcome it. As long as we walk on the dirt that makes earth, we will be subject to the effects of darkness. That is both annoying and delightful.
1. Annoying… because it is hard to see and function well in darkness.
2. Delightful… because we are light and we are here to overcome darkness.
Jesus said we aren’t to hide our light under a basket. I have noticed that many Christians seem to do just that. Instead of shining as a light, they hide and avoid being light.
The fruit of light is unavoidable. When there is light, there is fruit. That is true in the natural and in the Spiritual. When I lived in Montana, I spent a lot of days riding my horse in the mountains. One thing that I remember well: When the light and warmth of the sun melted the winter snow, wild flowers appeared in abundance. Whole hillsides would be aglow with vibrant color. A month earlier, they were covered in snow and could not be seen. We are seeing the earth covered in darkness; it is dark and gloomy. People are walking blindly into graves made with human ideas. The light of God’s people and the warmth of His presence are needed.
