Ephesians 2:4-6… But God being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive with Christ… by grace you have been saved… and raised us up with Him and seated us in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.
The little words are so important:
God, being rich in mercy. Made us alive with Christ. Raised us up with Him and seated us in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. Jesus is not a dispenser of truth and goodness. We don’t go to Him for what we want and then walk away with it. God wrapped the entire package in relationship with Him. When He first created man on earth, He put him in relationship. He made Eve and gave her to Adam to be his wife. And He announced, “The two shall become one flesh.” I can’t even describe the beauty of that. I can do things for Karla and she can do things for me and we can do things together, but those things don’t even come close to the bond I have with her, which God has given us. And that is the beauty of our relationship with Jesus. God has put it together and it is so much more than doing stuff together. Our relationship with Jesus is described by Paul as being IN Him. Like in a marriage, our bond with Jesus is deep and indescribable. Don’t try to explain it by the good things you do; but, also, don’t try to ruin it by indiscretion and sin. When I sin against God and it impacts Karla, our bond is interrupted. Protect the bond that you have with Jesus through the grace of God. Our relationship with Him is not possible without God’s grace. We don’t’ belong in His company. But, He invites us in.
I remind us that our relationship with God is His doing. We might think we contribute to it but we don’t. We just show up and repent of our ways. He does the rest. That is both wonderful and stressful. Wonderful because we are so fickle, we will always fail. Stressful, because we like to feel important. We want to think that we have somehow contributed to our relationship with Jesus. Or perhaps, we think that Jesus wants relationship with us because we are special, and somehow deserve it. We are undeserving. God loves us and saves us by His mercy which He lives IN… Not just with a supply on hand.
