Galatians 3:26… For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God through faith.
Paul states this as a done deal. We are not becoming sons of God; we are such already. Our position is not because of our works; it is because of His work and His grace. This whole letter to the Galatians is corrective. They had gotten into trying to do works to get them to heaven. This chapter, in particular, addresses that problem, as Paul even asks them in verse 3… Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the fresh?
We are saved by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We “stay saved” by the power of God. We don’t “stay saved” by our own actions. “So,” you might ask, “Why do I try to do what is right?” Because of gratefulness; we ought to be grateful for what God has done. Obedience is an act of gratefulness.
We are all sons of God through faith. Women might feel slighted by that but Paul addressed it in verse 28… There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male or female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. The playing field is leveled in Christ. The word “sons” could be translated “children” or “offspring”. All people are included in the plan of God with no distinction of color or gender. All are in need of a Savior, and He came for all.
This is both good news and disconcerting news. “Good” news because we are included. “Disconcerting” because the weirdo down the street is also included. The requirement is faith. Faith does not express itself the same in every person. Faith is tied to trust. How much do you trust God?
As God’s sons, we have an inheritance waiting for us; we also have certain responsibilities. We represent the family name. Our real home is in heaven; earth is our temporary domicile. We are ambassadors for Christ. Do you belong to God or do you belong to the company that pays the bills? Salvation initiates a complete transformation. As with a butterfly, nothing is left of the old caterpillar. That is our picture. We are not being adjusted; we are being transformed. We are sons of God… completely.
