The Importance of Scripture

October 3, 2018

Luke 24:45… Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures.

It is not humanly possible to understand the scriptures. Only by the Spirit of God is that possible. But, just because it is difficult, we dare not walk away from it; it still must be done.

Verse 31… And their eyes were opened and they recognized him. And He vanished from their sight.

This happened when Jesus travelled on the road to Emmaus. He walked with 2 disciples, who were upset about Jesus’ death, but their Spiritual eyes were closed and they could not recognize him. When He broke bread, their eyes were opened and they knew who He was. Jesus did not say, “Hey guys, it’s me.” Instead He took that time to explain the scriptures that were written about Him. And then, He disappeared. Is that not disheartening? He could have walked back to the other disciples with them but instead, He disappeared. In both verses that I have listed above, Jesus left them with scripture. He did not just leave them. This gives us the importance of scripture… at least, in Jesus’ mind.

Have you ever thought, “It would be easier if Jesus was here”? We have the scripture and the Holy Spirit. We are not hurting. But we want Him to be physically present with us. That is not readily available to us. But, Jesus is not worried. He knows we have scripture, and the Holy Spirit can open our minds to understand. I have complained that I can’t understand the book of Ezekiel. It is part of my daily reading lately and every day I ask God to reveal truth to me. Ezekiel and Daniel and Revelation are more relevant than ever these days. We are nearing the last of the last days. I want to be one who helps people navigate the mess that will claim the earth. Evil does not go away until Jesus comes and destroys it. In the meantime, we must deal with it and live life in its shadow. I ask God to help me understand how we are to live through, and in, the darkness. My ears are open to others who are asking the same thing. Will you be watching patiently for the Lord or will you be absorbed in the pleasures and cares of this world? Join me, as I try to understand Ezekiel. Tomorrow morning, I read chapter 25. The end is coming soon.
