The Tree of Life

Genesis 3:23-24… Therefore the Lord sent him out of the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. He drove out the man and at the East end of Eden, He placed the cherubim and a flaming word that turned every way to guard the tree of life.

And here we are, only the 3rd chapter of the first book of the Bible and man is removed from the garden of God. The big deal was that he was removed from the possibility of partaking of the tree of life. It seems that anyone who partook of that tree would live forever. (verse 22) That was fulfilled in Jesus. Anyone who believes in Jesus will live forever. As the tree of life, Jesus was in the garden of Eden. God protected the Tree of Life in the garden and we read about it again in the last chapter of the Bible.

Revelation 22:2… Through the middle of the street of the city; also on either side of the river, the tree of life with its 12 kinds of fruit yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

Imagine a tree that had leaves which healed the nations. Leaves fall off the tree every year and return to the ground. God determined those leaves to be the healing of the nations. The healing of nations is not the same as the healing of individuals. Nations are known as emotional groups of people with wills. The sickness of a nation could be the distortion of the will.

When the twin towers were destroyed in New York, the U.S.A. stood proud and said, “No one does that to us.” We responded in anger and with violence toward the perpetrator. The leaves of the tree of life are for our healing as a nation. In New Testament language, “Jesus is the healing of our nation.” We have been called the richest nation in the history of the world, but money could not buy us out of the Twin Towers destruction. In fact, our wealth was named as a reason for the attack. Any battle that takes place on the level of earth and human thinking, can only battle according to those terms. Our nation can only “win” this war by the sacrifice and love of Jesus.

This calls for the church to stand up and speak the Truth. Unfortunately, the church is often hiding in the corner, trying to survive the onslaught of evil.
